Irresponsible car fun from the noughties

This story dates back to 2002 and, looking back through today’s lens, it all seems a bit immature. Yet, it’s another seared into my memory as a joyous experience.

I was doing a series of articles on BMW’s performance car subsidiary M GmbH for US enthusiast magazine European Car, which sadly went the way of so many print publications in 2018. The series commemorated M’s thirty-year anniversary, so I took it upon myself to write a homage to arguably the king of the autobahn at the time – the M5. This is the article. I’m also pleased to say that it was my very first cover story. It was all stock photography, though. That was before the days when I dared take photos for publication.

Spoiler alert: I was pulled over by the Polizei! If you want to know what happened, you’ll have to read the article.
